SENTINEL – Vortex Flow Sensor

The SENTINEL vortex flow sensor is a flow measurement device based on the Kármán vortex street effect, designed for precise monitoring of fluid flow.

Features
  • High accuracy, excellent stability, and high reliability: With a simple structure and no moving parts, this sensor is widely used in industrial automation, including applications such as cooling water systems, process water monitoring, and wastewater discharge.
  • Vortex frequency detection: It determines flow rate by detecting the frequency of vortices generated as fluid passes an obstacle. Particularly effective for measuring low-conductivity liquids, it overcomes the limitations of electromagnetic flowmeters in such scenarios.
  • IO-Link communication function: Users can set parameters through IO-LINK and directly read process data such as flow rate and temperature.
  • Working Principle

Sentinel’s vortex flow sensor operates on the principle of the Von Kármán vortex street. When a fluid flows past a non-streamlined bluff body placed in the flow path, alternating vortices are shed from either side of the obstacle—a phenomenon known as the Von Kármán vortex street. The shedding frequency of these vortices is directly proportional to the flow velocity. By measuring this frequency, the fluid flow rate can be accurately calculated.

    Application Scenarios

The vortex flow sensor plays a critical role in various industrial settings:

  • Mold temperature controllers (MTCs): Real-time monitoring of medium flow rate and temperature ensures precise and stable mold temperature control, enhancing both production efficiency and product quality.
  • Industrial pure water monitoring: Its independence from fluid conductivity allows for stable and accurate flow measurement of low-conductivity industrial pure water, addressing the instability issues of electromagnetic flowmeters in such applications.
  • Cooling systems: The sensor monitors coolant flow conditions to prevent equipment damage due to cooling failure, ensuring safe and reliable system operation.
